I visited Varkala recently, on November 20, 2024, with my friends. It was an unplanned Varkala trip with my 3 friends. Of course, unplanned trips are memorable, and it was a road trip. On the way, we planned to stay for a day, but we ended up spending 2 days, or else we would rush and never be able to experience the true beauty.
This was the first time I visited Varkala, and I was amused by its beauty. I was shocked because a whole town was preached on a cliff, which was new to me.
Also, I’m 22 and a mallu (Malayali) who never visited Varkala before. Which made me dull.
If you love to watch sunsets and cliffs or have a beach vibe, Varkala is the best place you can visit on your trip to Kerala. In this guide, I’ll share my personal experience in Varkala, things to do in Varkala, everything I discovered, and all the tips you need to make your trip unforgettable.

On the way, we have created a list of things to do in Varkala and also prepared a small checklist of where to go and how to explore in 2 days, as we all did while travelling.
We plan to dedicate a day to North Cliff and the next day to South Cliff.
Spoiler alert: I don’t think you can experience the whole Varkala in 2 days because we can do plenty of activities, like Surfing, paragliding and other fun and adventurous activities.
How to Get to Varkala
Now let’s talk about how to reach Varkala, “The Beautiful Coastal Town in Kerala”.
The nearest Airport to Varkala is Trivandrum South, about 50 kilometres away. If you are in Kochi, you can hire a cab or Train.
If you are on a budget, you can easily spend less on travel expenses by Train, which is cheaper than a flight ticket or car rental. Only recommended if you are on a budget! The nearest railway station to Varkala is Varkala Sivagiri Railway Station.
If you prefer a Road trip, go for it. You can rent a cab or hire a taxi.
Best Time To Visit Varkala
I’m not saying this because I’m a Keralite. Trust me, Kerala is kinda hot (I mean, the temperature is high compared to other states). It is a bit humid even if you are near the beach.
So timing is crucial. If you plan an unplanned trip like me in summer, you must face the climate and humidity. Morning can be complicated if you are not used to summer in Kerala.
You know I’m from Palakkad, which is famous for its high temperature and sunny climate. I can manage the sun, can you?
Stop hyping and tell me already… When is the best time to visit Varkala? The best time to visit Varkala is between October and March, when the weather is pleasant, with clear skies and cool sunset evenings. It is also perfect for beach activities like swimming, surfing, and sunbathing. This time is considered the peak season with the most comfortable temperatures.
Peak season comes with tourist hikes, which affects the prices of accommodation stays, so be aware of that.
Main Tourists Attractions in Varkala
As soon as I arrived in Varkala, I could tell that the place was different. While it isn’t as commercialized as other Kerala destinations, it’s full of natural beauty, rich culture, and plenty of things to do. Let me give you a quick overview of some main tourist attractions that caught my eye. Seriously, I stumbled up.
Varkala Beach
I have to start with Varkala Beach, which was the highlight of my trip ( I mean for everyone). The first thing I noticed was the clean, golden sand stretching along the Arabian Sea.
Varkala Beach is nothing like the crowded beaches you’ll find in other parts of Kerala. That’s what makes it so special—it’s quiet, calm, and just perfect you can spend hours and hours just sitting and I remember doing it, spending hours there, just lying on the sand, listening to the waves. It felt like the rest of the world disappeared for a while.
What really sets this beach apart is the Varkala Cliff towering above it. The way the cliffs seem to give a unique view and that’s new. Honestly, if you love taking pictures, you’ll have a field day here. The sunsets, the colors of the sea, the rugged cliffs—it’s all so postcard-worthy.
The Varkala Cliff
The Varkala Cliff was another place that left me in awe. Standing on the edge of the cliff and looking down at the beach below was one of the most super real experiences. The cliff is lined with cafes, shops, and restaurants, all offering amazing views of the sea. I spent a couple of hours just walking along the cliff, stopping at different cafes to try Kerala’s famous seafood.
For me, the Varkala Cliff is the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing evening. I watched one of the most beautiful sunsets I’ve ever seen here. The warm colors of the sky against the blue sea created a picture-perfect moment.
Black Sand Beach, Varkala
The Black Sand Beach in Varkala is a hidden gem that offers a unique and enchanting experience for visitors. Unlike the typical golden or white sandy beaches, this beach features stunning black sand that creates a dramatic contrast against the azure waters of the Arabian Sea.
The black sand is a result of natural geological processes, primarily the presence of minerals like magnetite and ilmenite. This rare phenomenon gives the beach a distinctive and mesmerizing look, making it a must-visit spot for nature enthusiasts and photographers.
Things to Do in Varkala
While Varkala is known for its beach and cliffs, there’s so much more to do than just relax by the shore. Let me share some of my favorite activities that made my trip even more memorable.
1. Relax on the Beach
Of course, the beach is the main attraction, and it’s perfect for just kicking back and enjoying the surroundings. I spent some mornings walking along the shoreline, feeling the cool breeze on my face. Whether you want to swim, sunbathe, or just listen to the waves, Varkala Beach offers a peaceful escape.
2. Try Water Sports
For those who love a bit of adventure, Varkala offers plenty of water activities. I tried parasailing during my visit, and it was an exhilarating experience. There’s also surfing, which seemed to be popular with both locals and tourists. The water is calm, making it perfect for beginners like me.
3. Visit the Ancient Temples
Varkala is known for its spiritual side as well. I had the chance to visit the Janardhana Swamy Temple, a 2,000-year-old Hindu temple. The atmosphere was calm and serene, and it gave me a deeper appreciation for the cultural and spiritual richness of the region.
4. Explore the Local Culture
Varkala is a small town, so it’s easy to explore on foot. I spent an afternoon strolling through the local markets, where I found beautiful handmade crafts and souvenirs. The vibe here is very laid-back, and the people are incredibly friendly.
Where to Stay in Varkala
Varkala can be divided into two sides, the Varkala South Cliff and the Varkala North Cliff. North Cliff is lively, with a rush and fancy hotels, restaurants, pubs, and clubs. South Cliff is quite the opposite; it’s quiet and relaxing, with a serene view of the sea. If you want a peaceful beach view to stay, you can check in at a hostel or room in the South Cliff.
Now, where to stay, Varkala is famous for its backpacking culture; if you are on a budget, you can choose a dormitory stay or hostel. The average price of rooms starts at 1500 rupees, and you can get lower prices if you surf enough on the internet. IFYKYK!
We stayed in S’Cliff Beach Resort Varkala. It had a beach view, and the room was for 2 days, and it was incredible. The room was so clean, and the services were super well maintained.
Where to Eat in Varkala
Restaurants in Varkala – North Cliff
1. Darjeeling Cafe
Located on the vibrant North Cliff of Varkala, Darjeeling Cafe offers a cozy ambiance with mesmerizing views of Arabian Sea. The cafe serves a mix of Indian, continental, and Tibetan dishes. During my trip to Varkala, I learned a few things that might be helpful for your visit.

- Shop for Handicrafts: There are many small shops selling local handicrafts along the cliff. I bought a few souvenirs, including handmade jewelry and wooden carvings.
- Respect Local Culture: Varkala has a spiritual vibe, especially around the temples. Be respectful when visiting religious sites and remember to dress modestly.
- Go for a Sunrise Walk: I took a morning walk along the beach and cliffside at sunrise, and it was one of the most peaceful experiences of my trip.
